About the game

This serious game recreates the world between now, the year 2030, and beyond. Participants work together to complete projects, manage resources, and make decisions that impact the global goals. Each player has a role and objectives, but the outcomes depend on how participants interact—mirroring the complexity of real-world sustainable development. The game is based on real-world data and invites reflection on how our individual and collective choices shape the future. It has been played by over 400,000 people in more than 50 countries, including government officials, business leaders, educators, and students.

Objectives

The simulation is particularly useful for students and professionals who want to experience the complexity of sustainable development in a practical, interactive way. The following aspects are explored:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the 17 SDGs
  • Experience the complexity of global cooperation and trade-offs
  • Explore systems thinking in a practical, impactful way
  • Strengthen skills in collaboration, communication, and strategic thinking
  • Reflect on personal values and the role each of us plays in shaping the future

Whether you're a student exploring global issues, or an academic or professional services member interested in sustainability, the game is a fun and eye-opening experience for all.

Game mechanics

  • Players: 6–50 players
  • Location: a room that can comfortably host up to 50 participants, with moveable tables and chairs to allow for group work and open discussion.
  • Duration: 2–2.5 hours (including briefing, gameplay, and debrief)
  • Format: in-person, facilitated session

No special knowledge or preparation is required to join the 2030 SDGs Game- it’s designed to be accessible and thought-provoking for everyone, regardless of background or expertise.

During the game, players take on different roles and receive resources and project cards. They must collaborate, negotiate, and make decisions that influence global indicators: economy, environment, and society. A facilitated debrief follows, encouraging participants to connect the experience to real-life challenges and possibilities. Depending on the total number of participants, players either play individually or as a team.
