dr. J (Joost) Jansen, MSc

Biography

Joost Jansen is an assistant professor of Criminology at the Department of Law, Society and Crime (ÌÇÐÄÖ±²¥). He previously worked as a policy advisor at the Municipality of Rotterdam and the Immigration and Naturalization Service. His interdisciplinary and mixed-methods PhD research into the international debate on the meaning of migration, nationality and national identity in the context of sport has been published in several leading international journals. As a criminologist and sociologist, his professional interest lies mainly in the construction and meaning of social classifications. From a methodological point of view, his expertise focuses in particular on the application of new (big data) techniques to analyze textual data, such as large numbers of newspaper articles or social media messages. With this knowledge, Joost regularly participates in other research projects where such analyses are requested. In particular, he participates in a WODC funded research project on perceptions and experiences of violence and agression against journalists.
